Awake and Alive To Truth

Over the recent few months, there have been high profile rock stars of Christianity that have renounced their faith. This news has brought much disbelief and shock from many circles. This news has brought out the detractors and the supporters of faith. One of the most outspoken concerning this has been John L. Cooper of the Christian rock band Skillet. He has done several interviews, been vocal on social media, and penned a self-published book called "Awake and Alive to Truth: Finding Truth in the Chaos of a Relativistic World."

I have been a Skillet fan for over a decade. I've enjoyed their music and admired the expression of their faith while touring with secular bands. The band has never compromised. John carries that into his book.

“Awake and Alive to Truth" is a rallying cry for a world which desperately needs to return to the absolute truth. John contends, and I wholeheartedly agree, that is the Word of God. Truth is absolute. In this world of relativism and post-modernism, when each person has his or her version of the truth, John tells us plainly that this leads to "mutually assured self-destruction." He also states, "Truth, virtue, and righteousness are defined by God and God alone." We cannot discover absolute truth outside the Word of God. This point is driven home with strength, love, and conviction.

There are two statements made about the issues of relativism in the modern church. "Many who have walked away from Christianity would rather be rewarded with perceived virtue from a relativistic world than receive the gift of righteousness from an absolutely holy God." The second is: "The problem with being cool is that the adoration of the world is its own kind of idol, one that robs glory from God. (Is there anything more harmful in the Church than the rise of the rock-star preacher?)" Cooper doesn't mince words. We have diluted the truth of God's Word to be more palatable to the world, and that has brought disgrace to Him. Relativism has crept into Christianity, and we must recognize it for the hellish lie it is.

Cooper uses Scripture expertly throughout the book. He consistently points to the truth of the Scripture and the holiness of God. On those two things, there is no compromise. "To those of us who approach the Bible with faith, we must believe that what God says is true or else none of it is true." The Word is all true, or none of it is true. There can be no other way. Only when we embrace the absolute truth of God's Word will we be truly unified.

I was in high anticipation of the release of this book. I was not disappointed with what I read. The only problem I had with the book was what I perceive as a need for professional editing for clarity and sentence issues. The message is on target and one that desperately needs to be heard by all. When the world is devolving due to the spread of relativism and post-modernism, people like John L. Cooper cry out for us to return to the absolute truth of the Word of God. It is a cry all Christians should take up. Buy this book and read it.

May God bless you and keep you.
